We can’t wait to see your classes in the kitchen!
Our bespoke space, with height-adjustable workstations, is designed for classes of up to 30 pupils. Our chef educators are trained to teach a full cookery education to children aged 4 and above. All our staff are advanced DBS checked.
Our cookery curriculum is divided into the Key Stage groups and covers a full range of basic cookery skills – including preparing vegetables, meat and making bread – to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum. We include health and safety, knife skills and knife safety, and we can teach cooking over fire too.
We run half-day (2 hours) and full-day (4.5 hours) classes for school groups.
Half day sessions
Our half-day sessions start at either 10 am or 1 pm and run for 2 hours without a break.
Half-day sessions include a 1.45 hr food and cooking lesson.*
*Gardening sessions can also be added to half-day sessions by arrangement. These lessons are a fantastic way for children to get in touch with the seasons and discover nature. Gardening activities could include planting out seedlings, harvesting produce, and building growing structures or crafting nature-friendly habitats.
Full day sessions
Our full-day sessions run between 10 am – 3 pm and give children the full Hackney School of Food experience.
Full-day sessions include: time harvesting produce in the garden before the lesson, a 2-hour food and cooking lesson, lunch in the garden eating the food prepared in the morning, and either a 1-hour gardening lesson (or an additional cooking lesson).
To maximise your experience, please ensure you arrive 15 minutes before your lesson is due to start to ensure we have enough time to settle in your class and start on time.
Hackney Schools' offer
Hackney Primary Schools can book free classes for year 3 students at the Hackney School of Food.
“The children loved the hands-on experience so much and got a thrill out of making their own lunches and learning more about the tastes of the spices they could use.
The facilities and set-up are incredible and the learning experience the children had throughout the day was fantastic and linked brilliantly to our Cooking and Nutrition D&T program.”
Ally, DT Lead LEAP Federation
“The children and staff had such a great morning, it was a pleasure to see them thrive, be independent and empowered in the kitchen – especially as they are the younger members of school!
Now I know I can conduct some simple cooking with them in class!”
Molly, Year 1 Teacher
