Hackney School of Food marks a major milestone with the launch of its new Garden Room
We’re proud to share a major milestone for Hackney School of Food with the opening of our brand-new Garden Room – a vibrant, inclusive space designed to bring our seed-to-spoon food education to life.
Officially opened on 2 May 2025 by the Mayor of Hackney, Caroline Woodley, alongside Deputy Mayor Cllr Anntoinette Bramble and Climate Lead Cllr Sarah Young, the Garden Room will support hands-on garden learning, shared meals and community-centred events for people of all ages.
Joined by pupils from Mandeville Primary School, guests experienced a snapshot of our new garden education curriculum, exploring plants, biodiversity and how food grows – from soil to plate. As the Mayor told the children, “You are now ambassadors for a green and growing Hackney.”
This project was made possible thanks to funding from the Mayor of London through the High Streets for All Challenge Fund, with generous additional support from Nineveh Trust, Savoy Education Trust, Axis Foundation and Englefield Charitable Trust, and pro bono interior design by Studio Ilse. We’re incredibly grateful to all our funders and partners for believing in the power of accessible food and garden education.
Long-time supporter Prue Leith described the expansion as “a joy to see”, while Head Food Educator Tom Walker highlighted how the space will deepen connections between growing, cooking and healthier lifestyles.
